FOURTH DAY

Thursday has been again a very inspiring and motivating day for lessons, specially in the afternoon lesson.

In the morning, for the Language Development lesson we have begun with a revision of the vocabulary seen in the previous lesson. The teacher has put some words on the IWB and in groups we have  explained their meaning. Then she has thrown a fluffy toy to a student and he has had to pick a word from the board and explain its meaning out loud. Next the student has had to choose someone from a different group and to throw the toy and again pick a different word or expression and explain its meaning. I had done this activity with twelve-year-old students in which they had to ask each other questions and they really like it.
The next activity  is called jigsaw reading. In the previous lesson, we were divided into groups of four and were given a different article related to education. Today, we have been divided in groups of four and each one of us has read a different text. The objective has been to summarise the key points of our text to our colleagues using new vocabulary from them. It's been an interesting activity which has let me know new trends in education as well as get more information about the education systems of my classmates.

The second part of the morning has focused on improving our speaking and listening skills. We have done two listening activities related to first childhood memories. We have had to answer some questions and then  these activities have led to a speaking activity in which in pairs we  explained our first childhood memory.

The afternoon lesson of Methodology  has been devoted to using music  and songs in the teenage classroom. We have had a different teacher and she has given us great ideas and has showed us different resources to use music successfully in our lessons. I had quite high expectations for this lesson and the outcome has gone beyond them, so I have really enjoyed it. We have started with a brainstorming about the failures and successes  of using music with our students. Then we have experienced a wide variety of ways of using songs in the English classroom. For the first activity, we have had a card with a word written on it and we have listened to a song. Our goal has been to tell the number of times we have heard that word. I think it is a fantastic activity to work pronunciation with my pupils. In the second activity, we have worked with jumbled lines and we have had to order them at the same time we have been listening to the song. I believe it is a good activity to carry out with my students but giving them the first line of the song and maybe the first letter of the second line. After that, we have seen a different way to approach songs and that is letting the students choose the song and give a presentation about it following a model given by the teachers. Next we have heard an inspiring video about an advert for the Paralympics 2016 in the UK. It's been innovative how we have carried out the activity. Firstly, we have heard it paying attention to music, lyrics and sound effects, then we've talked about it in groups and finally we have seen the video.

We have continued with a video called One Man's Walk and we have had to do a matching activity and order some topics according to the way the were mentioned in the video. It's been an inspiring video that conveys a positive message.  I think students would like to work with this type of authentic material and to hear how young people really talk in an informal situation. It's a highly recommended activity and I can't wait to use it in my classroom and see my students reaction to it.
Here it is the video!

Then we have talked about using music as a stimulus for writing. The teacher has showed us how music can be used as an inspiration to create a film storyboard. This activity can even lead to shoot a video in which students play the script they have written. We have been given plenty of original ideas to be used in our lessons. Here it is the link!

To finish the day, we are going to the theatre to see the premiere of  Better Off Dead written and directed by a well-known person in Scarborough: Alan Ayckbourn.
